Description

St. Augustine has many beautiful buildings and this church is a work of art. It was built in the Venetian Renaissance style, in the shape of a cross, and was constructed in memory of his daughter Jennie, who died giving birth. As with his other projects, Henry M Flagler spared no expense - with hand-carved Santo Domino mahogany, detailed terra cotta frieze work by Italian artists and the massive copper dome overhead, the magnificent structure rivals some of the great churches of Europe. Flagler's first wife, daughter and granddaughter are buried in a mausoleum on these grounds. It was completed around 1890. Willya get a load of that! WOW! This is one big cathedral! Well, your POV really plays that up and gives this place a sense of presence that you just can't get from looking at something head on or from a distance. I love the textures of the dome in contrast to the masonry and those arches are simply fantastic. What a piece of architecture! Churches aren't places where I'd hang out, but when they look like this, I'll at least stop and stare and gawk and wonder at the lives of the people who built them. Marvelous and quite touching, actually. I'm glad I saw this image before going to bed. It's a great way to round out a less-than relaxing day. Thank you for that.

Nice photo Dana and an excellent write-up. I know a bit about Flagler from his railroad building activities. He did a great deal to open up Florida for the rest of America.
