If it hadn't been for Mark (anahata.c), I would have missed this number completely. He saw #2000, but I decided to celebrate with 2001, just to be different!!
This is a stone wall that goes alongside the Hoover Dam. I don't know why it's there or, how the heck they built it, but I do know there was just something quite compelling about it. Not that the dam isn't compelling enough; this simply caught my eye.
Zooming will be most beneficial!!

It supports the dam in a fantastic way
I've seen it to, I think its just a fence, to protect the area. great photo! RS
Its strange isn't it, cos there are enough places to fall from or rocks to dislodge below the wall to do damage. It seem to be in a strange place. I would expect it up the top or down the bottom but not in the middle!
My vote goes for retaining wall...as handsome as it is, it must have a purpose of some magnitude. Like it zoomed!
And it looks to have viewing windows in it!
What an amazing shot! I have got to see this Hoover Dam - well not really now as you have posted some really cool shots from here. When my husband saw it over my shoulder, he thought the shadow in the upper left corner looked like a silhouette of a face. I guess we all see different things and that is what makes it so interesting :) Really nice shot - Happy Holidays to you and your family!
Cool capture
Fabulous close up I think that building those pillions out beyond the wall is even a greater feat so much closer to the edge of the rock face :-O
Great find and beautifully captured. I think it is to stabilize the embankment and prevent rock slides. Merry Christmas Marilyn!
Good heavens, the Great Wall of China, apparently running through the base of the dam! Stark lighting effects, which seems to be your trademark, and cinnamon oatmeal textures, in this cool capture, Marilyn.
Wonderful lines and texture to this wall, I love how it just seems to meander along...great find and capture!
It is a beautiful wall and capture. I had not noticed it during any of my visits. I checked and that wall was there inmy 1996 photos. Congrats on #2001 and of course #2000. Dana
well marilyn, I only have time for one today, to say happy holidays to all, but you know what I feel about all these pieces and I'll be returning to them after the holidays. But since this is the image you chose to celebrate with (how can people post 2000 and not know it, lol??? "Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"), I chose this one for today. I agree with harry---it looks like the Great Wall running smack dab into the dam---what a shot! Like someone looked up & said, "NOW what???" It looks like a model as tara says, and cinnamon oatmeal? Yes. A toy-like shot of a majestic sight, even the big electrical towers seem like pieces of a toy train model---yet full view it's really a dam. Great choices, love the composition, and it's a lot of fun (which is amazing considering it's a huge looming forbidding structure with rocks & walls, etc). You'll hear from me soon, but a great holiday to you, lots of joy, and thanks for your amazing gallery of light & beauty & excitement & fun & madness & play all year round. 2001 is a big freakin' deal, I wish you another 2 million. Happy holidays, dear friend! Hope it's wonderful & you'll hear from me soon!
Ah, the Great Wall of Hoover...built to keep invading Mongols out. Well, okay, maybe not! But you never know. I suspect it might be a retaining wall of sorts, or maybe a fancy support. At any rate, it's an intriguing addition to an already intriguing place. This is a marvelous, infinitely zoomable shot! I like it quite a lot and I love the earth tones and the warmth of the light. Its all so comforting, albeit a bit rocky. This is fantastic. I'm glad I'm seeing this in Christmas Eve too...I'm running around a bit, but I'm glad I got to pause, inhale, drink eggnog and Dr. Pepper (not at the same time, mind you) and see this shot. It's a winner! I love it. I hope that you're having a FUN Christmas...and a warmer one than Chicago offers, but hey...we got snow, real snow. It's falling as I write this. But now I'm rambling, so I'll shut up and go back and look at this pic again. I like it a lot!
