Description
Still inside the Flagler College women’s dorm. A Caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar and supporting an entablature on her head. The entablature is the flat top of the support directly under the wooden beam. There are eight Caryatids, three robed figures of women, per Caryatid and they are carved oak, which supports the 80 foot high domed ceiling. The eight Caryatids shape the octagonal plan of the Rotunda. The figures are replicas of the Caryatids in the Erechtheum, on the Athenian Acropolis.

A lot of work went into that impressive support. :) Excellent capture!
They are very impressive and I didn't know that that is what they were called. I love the richness of the wood.
Wow!! Awesome carving!!
nice piece of wood ...
Stellar capture of the cherry wood-like colored Caryatids and environs, Dana. Rococo to the nth degree. And, Caryatid, another word I must remember as I mingle with the nouveau riche.
just love that woodwork, cool shot..
Maybe I've been reading too many of Frank Herbert's Dune novels, and the continuation of the Dune saga by the venerable Mister Herbert's son and another author...but as I look at this image, I'm struck by how close it is to what I imagine the Atreides castle at Arakeen looks like. Lots of wood, lots of details, lots of women serving as pillars, and all sorts of other details. I love it when one piece of art inspires me to think of another, and this really inspires me to imagine other places. I really like the tone of this image, and again, you capture such warm, rich colors.
