Description
Oatman, Arizona on historic route 66 was founded about 1906 when gold was found in the area. By 1931 the area's mines had produced over 1.8 million ounces of gold, but by the mid 1930's the boom was over and in 1942 the last remaining mines were closed as nonessential to the war effort.
Burros first came to Oatman with the early prospectors. The animals were used inside the mines for hauling rock and ore, and outside the mines for hauling water and supplies.
As the mines closed and people moved away the burros were released into the surrounding hills.
The burros seen in this picture are descendants of the released domestic work animals and are wild and protected by federal law.
This picture was taken on 30 October 2010.

Nice shot. I went there twice. The gold mine is something to see too. The hotel is pretty famous for Clark Gable and other actors staying there. Aloha

Interesting shot!!!
Excellent shot! A fantastic city!
great shot!
The hills and the buildings and the burros evoke the old west, although I'm sure by 1935 there had been a lot of people driving out there to try their luck. A fascinating capture of visitors looking for a bit of history! Excellent shot. I see this photo is only a couple weeks old ... I'm glad you're out and about, and would love to hear about your travels!
Very cool shot. The animals just wandering around give it a very interesting atmosphere. Nice to see you posting :)

Reminds me of Virginia City, NV. These old mining towns were wild and raucus in their haydays. Like seeing the wild burros wandering free:)
