Description
The Nine Muses Sarcophagus (a decretive stone coffin) was made about 230 AD. Roman style and made of marble. As the title indicates there are nine Muses plus Apollo, and Athena on the front. If I had caught the sides, you would see Ulysses, listening to the Sirens. Muses are Goddesses of creative inspiration in poetry, song and other arts; the companions of Apollo and the daughters of Jupiter. My research indicates that this is not a copy. Zoom to see the details.
Left to Right on the Sarcophagus:
Polyhymnia (sacred hymns)
Euterpe (lyric poetry)
Thalia (comedy)
Melpomene (tragedy)
Erato (love poetry)
Deceased as Apollo (sun god)
Athena (goddess of wisdom)
Calliope (epic poetry)
Terpsichore (dance and choral song)
Urania (astronomy)
Clio (history)

If I'm not mistaken, some of these muses names are actually hair products here at Rendo. Thank you for the info, Dana!
Very nice capture and thanks for the listing of names
wonderful sculpture!!
Fabulous ancient artwork! Great capture Dana!
Great shot, but not to be confused with the version sitting in The Louvre!
Superb! This is such a wonderful capture. Ah, the Muses...they're such interesting mythological critters...and naturally Athena and Apollo would have to be involved with them in some way...of the members of the ancient Greek Pantheon, they were the most complex beings...and better behaved than their sibling/counterparts/parents. I love the details in this and yeah...it's most definitely a zoomer! Great work.
Nice capture Dana, very clever sculpture.
Great detail and as usual top info.
FASCINATING Dana! I never knew their names before. Great stuff.
Beautiful details and capture!
marvelous picture!
Great capture! ;o)
Excellent capture and info! :)
Wonderful capture and information, Dana! Thanks for that .. zooming is a must!
SUPERB SHOT
A lovely capture and what a lot of work has gone into the making of this coffin.
Although I am familiar with their names via my hobby of crossword puzzles, this is one terrific shot of the Muses Sarcophagus and environs, Dana.
very wonderful wow bet the artist had a time to this one
Amazing info, great capture!!!
This is the one I was reminding my Mom about the other day! If memory serves me correctly about this piece, it was actually used as a kind of crematoria of its time. (don't quote me on that one though, it's been a while). But I have always loved this piece. Wonderful shot!
