Description

This is an educational image from nature. There is not a pretense of presenting a wonderfully composed scene, only a scene presented me by these wasps. Once the store owner discovers the nest, it will be destroyed I am sure. For now, these paper wasps are emerging young from the nest, likely drying or airing wings just outside the nest. Adults are directing it all, helping the newly emerged to get oriented and flying in with food for larvae in the cells. You can see some larvae deep in the cells. You can also see a few new wasps coming out of cells, new to the world. So, there is my stinging great photo for today! I was fascinated watching these wasps at work in the colony. Shot at 1/30 sec, ISO400, 105mm lens.

I never would see this anywhere else. I would have seen this and been 5 miles down the road before I thought about taking a photo of it. :-) So, thanks for the look. Only way I'll ever see this.

Woah, dude! Hornets! I have yet to find a good nest of them around here. We got yellow jackets (and more yellow jackets) and a bee or two, but not many red beauties. This is a pretty advanced nest as well, so that's kind of a good sign (at least for me) in terms of survivability. What a shot. I love this!

This is a wonderful shot - I've never seen such a busy nest. Dana
