Description
Remote Separation.
Yet another unique feature of the three part payload which has been launched into orbit using NASAs Cocoon Cargo Carrier are a series of remote locking latches which are used to hold the three component sections of the payload together whilst in flight.
Fashioned after electronically operated quick release switches, these remote locking latches are currently being used to hold together the three component parts of the payload. The choice of which section of the three part payload to lock onto after its separation from the Cocoon has not been a random one, but part of the extensive pre-planning which has taken place before the Cocoon even left the launch pad .
As the shuttle nears, and finally comes to a dead stop, near the huge orbiting ISS a remote radio signal is sent which separates the section in the jaws of the orbital shuttle from the remaining two sections of the three part payload.
With the remote latches confirmed as un-locked the shuttle can now safely manoeuvre the first of the three sections into its new position on the lower docking port of the ISS. Once sealed safely in place, astronauts wearing pressure suits will enter the section from the interior of the ISS to confirm that the newly joined section is safely secured and that its structural integrity is intact so that it can be safely pressurised and the next phase of the mission can take place..
