Description
Separation.
As the various sensor systems located within the nose of the Cocoon detect that its forward motion has finally come to a dead stop in Earth orbit a series of electronic commands is sent which fire the three sets of explosive bolts which hold the Cocoons base, sides and nosecone in place.
The force of these small explosions will act to separate the various components which make up the Cocoon allowing for the first time the payload contained within to be seen by the crew of the orbital shuttle hovering not far way.
The payload contained within Cocoon today is the next unique concept design created by Carter for NASA for his programme to get America back into space.
The three modular habitat components, each with its own docking adaptor will be slowly fitted over the next few hours to the lower docking port of the orbiting International Space Station. Once the three units are safely secured, tested and pressurised it will free up the two additional docking ports NASA has been using for its orbital shuttles and create for the first time a self contained living and working environment for the crews of NASAs Orbital Shuttle Fleet.
The units may seem small but with each unit having a diameter of nearly ten feet and ranging in length from nearly twenty-five to fifty feet there is room within for all the facilities needed by the astronauts for their lives way from the Earths surface.
