Description
This is Gary's house with two of his chairs next to me on this little lava mound. He's a carpenter by trade and built this little two story house. At the time this picture was taken, lava was coming down the road and headed towards his house. We were hoping that it would just stop or go around his house. It didn't. There was no news media people around when his house caught on fire. But I was told that Gary did make a contract with one of his friend photographers Leigh Hilbert regarding pictures of his house on fire. Very moving video, brought tears to my eyes. So interesting to see this home before the tragedy.
Realy sad his house been lost to the elements, I am sure he is worked a lot to have it this nice. The video is quite dramatic and I am a bit surprise of the lack of report from a local tv/news station.

that must be some old lava there for the grasss is growing up. I watched the vedio ...so sad to see it go up in fire. the chairs gives it a surreal feel here
It harms that the lava did not make a detour......
I watched the videos... sucks Gary didn't have freinds in the construction business the could of dug some trenches to guide the lava in a different direction... If he lives next to another lava source, he might want to go ahead and dig the trenches.... It was wild watching it creep toward the house and it looks like it went straight to the stairs and said I'm home - just like an unwanted guest that kills ya in your own home ...thanks for the video link it was well wirth the watch.
Mike...Building a trench wouldn't help. First, you would need a major construction company to dig the old lava rocks out to make a trench. Then the new lava would probably fill the trench, harden and cross over it. The river of lava is quite wide too. Can you imagine that the lava had built a bench of 44 acres plus in the ocean...then it collapse... Just to much lava to challenge... Mother nature is just to strong. Nice thoughts from you anyway. Wow! This is a definitely different look! A sad and unfortunate story, though cool space here and set up! Must be such an interesting feel to be sitting out here knowing exactly what you would be "sitting on". I really did enjoy the series of yours Sharky!

It is sad to lose the home, but he can always build again. He has the right attitude. It is good to have caught it on camera. We have flood insurance and fire insurance here... would hope your friend has some kind of insurance too, or maybe they don't have that kind for this. Sad, but also a new beginning, too.
