Description
I promised you a photo of one of my old cars and this Vauxhall was my pride and joy back in 1979.
The car was mechanically stock, powered by a 1500cc 4 cyl petrol engine with a 3 speed manual gear box. The 14" rear wheels and jacked up suspension gave it that nose down 'I'm fast whilst I'm standing still look' inspired by drag cars of the time. The stark reality was that this cars handling was dreadful, as soon as you attempted to round a bend at speed and with a top speed of 70mph, it wasn't very fast in a straight line either! The drum brakes all round meant that it didn't stop to well as well!
That aside as an engineering apprentice with little driving experience, I was just able to insure it and I just loved it's appearance. To me it was my 'look-a-like 55 Chevy' and those side pipes sounded great especially at 'speed'. The car had a smell of it's own thanks to a leather interior and the column gear shift meant the front seats joined like a bench and that was handy with my girlfriend by my side!
Apologies for the quality of this image, but I'ts a scanned image of the original photo taken with a Kodak 110 camera!!

I had a 55' Chevy and a 57'. I loved both. the 55 had a six and the 57' a 283. when you are young, to me anything with wheels that would run was awesome. I seldom did anything to modify any of my cars, because I wanted to have some spare money to be able to make repairs.my son is 38 and I doubt if he has ever learned that fact. this car looks like a Russian model
I can certainly see why you liked it...know it must have made you feel great. Let's see in 1979 I was driving a 1969 Pontiac 4-door family sedan (ho-hum) and a British Racing Green 1976 Fiat Spyder that I just loved...until body rust set in:)
Outstanding capture my friend.
Phil... Looks fab! Bet you wish........ Still, there is always time.. Ask Gail..lol Rob
