Description
After lunch we stopped at a pastry shop for dessert. The cakes and pies displayed looked so rich and irresistible. But oh what a surprise for the visitors. We found the Japanese version of Western baked goods contained about 30% of the sugar we use. It was a very modern place with lots of glass and chrome. My friend Larry went to use the restroom and came back both annoyed and amused. “We fly into an ultra-modern city like Tokyo full of glass and chrome,” he began to rant. “Then we take the ultra-modern train to the ultra-modern Ginza where we have cake at an ultra-modern pastry shop full of glass and chrome. Then I go into their ultra-modern restroom and have to use their ultra-modern squat toilet!”
In 1946 my father was introduced to the Japanese restroom. The United States Army, ever helpful, provided instructions for use. In 1976 it was my turn.

Fascinating that they choose a floor covering which will disguise any 'accidents'..

Ah memories! And not of the most pleasant kind! I don't remember the Air Force handing out instructions. I had a funny experience of the opposite kind. I was at a very fancy nightclub in Tokyo that had western styled toilets. Inside each cubical, pasted above the roll of paper, were drawings, demonstrating how to use them. Funny post! I like the way you combined the photo and the instructions.
