Description

The Mallee Emu-wren sings as a group of Diamond Firetails watch. The Mallee Emu-wren lives within a severely fragmented distribution in the Victorian and South Australian mallee regions. This wren is endangered because of land clearance for agriculture and livestock and fires. It's population is down to 1,500-2000 birds. Relatively small changes in habitat quality could cause even more sudden local declines, and the loss of, or changes to peripheral habitat may affect core habitat. This birds’ habitat is now so fragmented that any single fire event could be catastrophic. Mallee-heath is used in the east of this birds’ range, and may mean that the strongholds of the species are at most risk from loss to single fire events. Emu-wrens breed in pairs, with the male defending a small territory with regular bursts of song. It is very secretive and often cocks its’ tail straight up. The Diamond Firetails have a wider range than the wren and are found in eastern Australia, from Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, to south-eastern Queensland. Firetails are "near threatened" for the same reasons the Emu-wrens are. Firetails are also collected within the pet trade and isolated subpopulations are susceptible to illegal trapping. During courtship, the male Diamond Firetail holds a long piece of green grass in his bill, then flies to a branch where he sits near the female and begins to bob up and down. When she approaches, he twists his neck around and opens his bill just like young begging for food. Rendered in Poser 7 Pro without postwork. Models: Mulga and Ghost Gum from Xfrog's excellant Oceania plant libraries. Birds (me from my SBRM Australia V1 and V2)

Hi Ken, Neat wingers. Another great product. You always make your birds so realistic! I'm new to Renderosity, but in the months ahead I will be using more winged things in my postings. (sendingfriendsrequest) Bill

Ken, another great depiction of birds from your upcoming Australian volumes. Love those X-frog plants behind, they are typically Australian. Good job on this image. Jan
