Description
It was just this afternoon. After pulling weeds in the garden we were sitting quietly and comfortably in our lawn chairs in the shade.
Suddenly, out of nowhere came an ancient sound of power increasing thunderously moment by moment. I eagerly crained my neck around the porch roof and starred up among the tall fir trees and with a deafening roar three spectacular planes flew low overhead in a tight side-by-side formation. Whoosh! They were here and gone. "Is it June 1944", I exclaimed, as they flew out of sight. "They have invasion stripes just like those that flew across the channel 66 years ago this month!"
What a time not to have the camera ready. D*#%.
Twenty minutes later we were standing in our driveway when that same sound began again. This time the camera was ready...but I was actually a bit nervous,..."I can't miss this time", I mumbled. Suddenly, the same B-25 Mitchell appeared over a tree and shot by straight overhead with a roar. Ten seconds later the two P-51 Mustangs zipped past like a screaming pair of banshees.
As a result, these pictures are a bit rough but the experience left us smiling from ear to ear and thankful for the exciting 30 second show right over our driveway!
Title inspired by the 1944 movie, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo staring Spencer Tracy with Van Johnson and Robert Mitchum.
Hope by viewing this collage and reading these words, you get a little of the feel that we got about four hours ago! Wow!!

made your day... wonderful shots
Very nice Bill...there's a few times when I've missed a great shot because I was cameraless...
They sure put on quite a show for you, I am glad you were able to get your camera in time,, lol how many of us keep a camera on us as we are weeding??
Pretty good shots taken under adverse and inadvertent conditions, Bill. Now if they had thrown a couple of Zeros into this mix then you would really have had something to witness and photograph. And, it was Jimmy Doolittle piloting the B-25 as it flew overhead. I can't imagine Spencer Tracy playing Doolittle in the movie, because the General was bald. I remember Van Johnson felt real bad about losing his plane after the raid.
You were quick to get these great photos. I usually end up with a great sky view. Well done.
Right place, right time! (at least the second time through) ;) Sometimes all you get is one. Good catch!
what a great sequence, happy you! you got it in time!
Being an old movie nut I'm familiar with that film. I laughed when I read the title. These are amazing captures! As someone who tries to photograph life in motion/moving objects regularly,I know how difficult it can be and how much concentration and co-ordination are involved. For as fast as these babies must have been moving these are great!
Super work!!!!!
Got your own little air show, most have been a little excitement for the day. :) Great collage!
Thats a treat! Wonderful capture and composition.
I am jealous! Way cool fly-by that was just for you, Bill!
This is superb, and leave it to the insect nut like me to think that those are mating stripes! Some people! Ya can't just show 'em a great photograph without them thinking of bugs, and whether or not those stripes attract females or intimidate other males! These are quite stunning for "quick images" and the collage is perfect! I would love to have heard these puppies flying overhead. I've seen fewer B-25s, and that's a shame...they're as impressive as their bigger cousins, and have better fashion sense too. I have yet to see a B-52 that looks as good in stripes. This is fantastic and I'm glad I finally got around to seeing it.
