Description
Here is a new species capture for me. I have seen a few of them over the years but they are not common at my place and they are usually to high up to get shots of. This one glided about 4 foot off the ground with wings stretched wide for around 15 minutes over about 1/4 acre of open open grassy area and landed often.
It appeared quite a bit blacker in real life but the flash brought out the browns I guess. It is a pretty Swallowtail but not very showy and most of its cousins are quite vibrantly colored as yesterdays posting of a Tiger Swallowtail demonstrates.

During our 'Springwatch' programme it was explained that there is no pigment in butterfly scales, but that all the colours are due to tyhe play of light...mind-boggling! A super shot, Lee.
Beautiful, captured, Lee. Wonderful shot! I agree with Andrea. The (sun)light is what 'it makes'. I'm thinking about the Purple Emperor, where you so good can see the different. I've seen/'met' them in nature, so beautifully, isn't it?
