Description
This is the centre hub of the sails from Maud Fosters Windmill and you can clearly see the date stamp on the new timbers fitted last year.
For the engineers out there in Rendo land, the rods and levers attached to the sails are linked to a weighted govenor inside the mill tower that regulates the sail rotation speed by angling the blades. In a strong wind or not, the govenor mechanism attempts to keep the sails turning at a constant speed.

wonderful shot. wonder if it work on a boat?
Quite a combination of the old and the new. The hub is certainly an attention getter for me:)
Some engineer missed a few sleeps over this design! Check out the Voith-Schneider propulsion system for tugboats if you want to see something a wee bit more complicated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voith_Schneider_Propeller This second one provides a working real-time model that you can drive and understand how the system works. It is really amazing to see a real one in action. http://www.voithturbo.de/545950.htm
Well to complicated for me my friend but a stunning capture and glad you could share the capture and information.
Never seen sails from this angle before! A really cool shot..Good to see at least one set of sails are being looked after.. Must have cost a fortune! Good one Rob
Everybody please check out Whaleman's link to the Voith Schneider mechanism, thats clever and driving the simulation is a hoot!
