Description
This is Lake Crescent on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.
Looking at this it's easy to imagine yourself alone, enjoying the sunshine and the beautiful views, having hiked miles up into the mountains to get here.
In reality, we just pulled off Highway 101, which is a torturously twisty road around the lake. There was a nice place to park, and we spent an enjoyable half hour just experiencing the beautiful surroundings. And taking a few photographs, of course.

This is exquisitely marvelous, and marvelously exquisite. I love the moss and the lichens, the lumpyness of the boulders and the tree roots and the whole, wile, intriguing promise of woodlice! Well, maybe the woodlice are only something I'd look for. The light is astonishing, by the way, almost otherworldly, and there's a part of me that sees this as immensely brooding. It also reminds me of a spot along the Vltava River where you can see remnants of an old monastery and lose yourself in stories of alchemists, insane royalty, while also enjoying the brandy-infused company of about a half-dozen guys with names like Honza, Pavl, Victor, and Stanislav. Needless to say, I love this shot, and all that it evokes.
