Description

This statue of Chief Gadao next to the ruins of a Spanish Chapel is located in Inarajan, Guam. In a historic tale Chief Gadao of Inarajan was victorious in a battle of strength when he defeated Chief Malaguana of Tumon. Guam is part of the Marianas in Micronesia. It is located a little less than 2,000 miles west of Wake Island, about 1,300 east of Luzon, Philippines and about 1,600 south of Japan. It is believed that peoples of Indo-Malay stock migrated about 2,000 B.C. from Southeastern Indonesia to this island. These people became known as the Chamorros. On March 6, 1521 the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived with his small, three-ship fleet at Umatac Bay, Guam. He had set out with five ships from Spain with the goal to circumnavigate the Earth. Because of the tendency of the native population not to barter but rather take, he named Guam the 'The Island of Thieves'. Spain did not claim possession of the island until 1565. The following 350 years it was a Spanish colony, and was used by Spanish galleons sailing between the Philippines and Mexico as a supply point. Guam was captured by the United States in a bloodless landing during the Spanish-American War. Guam was captured by the Japanese on 8 December 1941 and was under Japanese occupation from 1941 until 1944 when it was recaptured by United States Armed Forces in bloody fighting. There are several US military installations on Guam, including Anderson AFB. During the height of the Vietnam War, two B-52s were launched every 15 minutes around the clock on their 4,000 mile round trip to Vietnam. This picture was taken in April 1988 and later scanned. Thanks for visiting, Sig...
