Description
Hello everyone and thanks for looking...
I was looking back through my gallery, and it seems it's been a while since I've posted any pictures with male characters in them. Now, while I have a great appreciation for the female form, I should every now and then use some of the stuff I have for the opposite sex in a picture or two, just to prevent you all from thinking I'm some sort of crazy person, don't you think?
Also folks, I need your help with a problem...
I rendered this picture in Poser 7, using 3 lights and the render settings slider bar pushed up to it's highest Firefly setting (Final). The lights are one blue infinite light with no shadows set to about 20% strength, one IBL with no shadows set to about 20%, and one spot light with raytraced shadows set to 100% and shadow blur radius set at 4.00.
Around the edges of the clothing, hair, and anything that casts a shadow close to another object, the shadows all have this jaggy unnatural look to them. Usually, I fix this in post work using my handy dandy pen tablet and Photoshop Elements.
I know there must be a way to get rid of this effect during rendering, but I haven't found a way to do it. This is really frustrating, and this picture finally made me want to ask for help. Does anyone know what's causing this and how I can fix it???
Thanks in advance to the community out there, and as always, I really appreciate your comments and assistance.

I took your advice and re rendered the image, and I was amazed at the difference! The biggest effect was from the shading rate setting on the advanced render tab. Not only did it reduce the 'jaggies' on the shadows, it brought out a lot more detail in all the textures. It did add a little render time, but the result is definitely worth it. Many many thanks to chasfs and Madbat for your suggestions!

I wish I could help you on this, Tom, but I work with DS! Anti-aliasing setting? Great render otherwise -
Hey Tom... Minimum shading rate in your render settings... Lower numbers will increase quality. The shading rate determines how many times a polygon gets subdivided during the render process, so lower numbers cause the polygons to be effectively "smoothed". A setting of 1 is equivalent to one polygon per pixel of the final image. A setting of LESS than one will divide this down more... It will probably help, especially around sharp edges and soft shadows.
hiya tom I recognize that pose..great work..and I can't help ya with the shadows...sorry..i'm still trying to teach myself that
Great looking pic Tom and it sounds like you got the answer you needed from someone who knows. I think the postwork you did was wonderful and made it first rate.
Excellent image!!!
Try setting the shadow blur radius to 2.0 and the min bias to .22 Great render, fantastic characters!
Sorry I can't help you with the problem, I use DAZ Studio. But I really like your image as it is....great scene!
Excellent POV and posing, fantastic scene!
sorry new to all this 3d effects but i think what 'chasfh' said might b the way! i'm still trying to figure out how to move bryce characters around! lol! great render tho!:)*5
Awesome pose! Great scene!
Nice style and treatment!!!!!! The day any render can be its best without at least some post work I guess a lot of people will be out of jobs!!!!!! Just kidding. Wish I could help.... I love the lighting and poses... Very dramatic and intense scene!!!! Great characters and setting!!!!!! Super job!!!!!!!!!
wow tom, one of the most incredible images i've seen you do. killer lighting and scene. top notch!
Excellent render - nice classic pose.
Nicely done. Choosing what to correct in Poser (or what I use, Carrara) and what to correct in Photoshop is a challenge. Sometimes the fix in Poser or Carrara is more complicated (or too difficult to find a solution for), so I end up doing post-work. I hope you find the solution to your problem
Excellent atmosphere my friend, masterful creation and style!
That kind of thing is almost always shading rate, the lower the better. This one really reminds me of frazetta's Conan covers...cool!
