Description
This is the basic spiked helmet that the German infantry wore, at the outbreak of WWI. The eagle display on the front is Prussian. Other Germanic states would have had their insignia on the front, as well as thier distinctive cocade on the left side. Prussia's colors are black and white. The German National colors of black, white and red are on the right. The grey paint on this helmet's furniture is in excellent condition, and the liner is very nice, too. (Many liners are now found much the worse for wear, and many are in tatters.) No name is in this helmet. One very unusual point of interest: the forward visor metallic trim is painted black. It normally was painted the same grey as the rest of the furniture.
In 1915, helmet bodies were made of pressed felt, but only for a few months. This was due to the harsh strain of a war that should have been over in six months! That was the prevailing theory of most of the major belligerant nations. The Germans, French, British Russians and Austrians all expected a quick war. Thus, they had stockpiles for only six months of war. The exhaustion of those reserves led to modifications of uniforms and equipment in many cases. Uniform colors went to drab, and complexity and quality were cut to basics by 1916. Gone forever was the last vestage of previous wars with colorful uniforms.
In 1916 the Germans produced, in a secret and astounding seven step process of manufacture, a steel helmet. One of these will be included as the final helmet in this series.

Striking design and capture, although I'm not sure how much protection this nicely crafted helmet would offer, but you would look very swish on the Battle field ! Also interesting detailed information, I picked this one because my Mother is from Prussia. Well done & ~Cheers~

Excellent photo!
Thank you for the interesting history. I understand that WWI would have been a quick war had the US stayed away. The US banking class had other thoughts about that stance, however. I love the photo. Excellent work.
Little correction here, the German National flag colours used to be B+W+R but we all know, it is currently Black, Red & Gold. (since 1949) Being of Prussian descent, I really appreciate you finding this treasure and sharing it with us... BTW where did you photograph it ? I be interested to know, you can S/M me. thanks BB
We have the National World War I museum here in Kansas City. But your collector friend has a better collection of these early helmets. Here's a link for a quick look: Click Here
