Description
This is a scan of a photograph I took perhaps a decade ago. It's our moon and the planet Mars very close together in the sky. If you squint and use your imagination a bit, you can make out a white pole at the bottom of Mars.
I'm not sure I still have the original image or negative, so this small scan is all I have left of it, which is a shame 'cause I really like this image. It says something to me. I'm not sure what, but something. :)
Back then I didn't realize what a rare photo op this type of event was. I just assumed it happened every month as the moon whizzed past the planets, but usually their paths aren't so closely aligned, so they're too far apart to get in one shot (at least if you're zoomed in enough to tell that the planet is a planet and not a star).
Anyway, back then I didn't bother photographing Saturn when it not only passed near the moon, but actually disappeared behind it. What a wonderful picture that would have made. Alas.
Well, I hope you enjoy this one. If ever I find the original, I'll try to get a larger scan of it to replace this dinky version.

What a natural and stellar capture, as seen probably only by a few ? It says to me: so close and yet so far away, us mere mortals one can only dream about, reaching that surface, one day soon ? BTW I can also make out a light spot on Mars... BB
I adore this...and it is a stellar occurrence. Saturn has always fascinated me so I'm sort of sorry too you didn't get that one. :-) But this is really amazing.
This is very nice, and evokes in me a bit of the feeling I had when I looked at the "Pale Blue Dot" in Carl Sagan's book of the same name. The pale blue dot was Earth, of course, and Sagan had to fight really hard to get the boys and girls at NASA to turn the unit around to see what we look like from very far away as that probe (I forget the name) was leaving our solar system. We are indeed small fish is a much larger sea. The interesting thing about your photo is that it seems to suggest that the Moon is a natural stepping stone to Mars, and I guess that really is, or will be, the case. I hope you can find the original as it is an awesome shot, and I do see the white southern pole!
