Description
Getting to tour this one of a kind, "First Modern Airliner" was a fortunate "VIP" experience for auntietk and me. It is in a separate hangar at Boeing's Restoration Center, Everett, Washington.
All airliners prior to this Boeing Model 247, which made its' first flight in February 1933, were slower, noisier, and less sophisticated in every way. The 247 preceded the more famous DC-1, 2 and 3.
We laugh now about how this happened. We met the senior volunteer...the man in charge of the entire Center. It was near the end of the day, no other visitors were there. We were ready to depart for dinner but "Bob" wouldn't let us go without seeing his pride and joy.
Regular visitors only get to stand behind a rope and observe from afar. We were shown both the inside of the plane and the entire hangar...with all sorts of unseen goodies rarely seen by other visitors.
This Boeing 247 is airworthy, goes to airshows and will one day be in the Boeing Museum of Flight hanging from the ceiling where no one will see it up close again. Why isn't it there now? A new museum building needs funding and building.
This experience goes to show, some times you just have to be in the right place at the right time:-)

Lovely posting of this collage of this wonderful looking old plane, well done Bill!!
How wonderful to be in the right place at the right time to see inside this old beauty. The airlines have come a long way haven't they. Makes you wonder what we will be riding in, in another 50 years. A super collage.
Beautiful series of photos Excellent work!
Super shots Bill...to cool.
What a great story Bill. I love when these things happen! It was a nice that you were able to get the VIP views of the inside. Nice work!
Great images, bill.
Oh, Man! That's just tooooo cool! What a great opportunity, and you got some great photos, Bill! A few years ago, our camera club got a wondeful private tour of the TWA museum and the beautiful restored Connie at the downtown Kansas City airport. I'll have to dig those photos out and post a couple.
Well, as I often say, I'd rather be lucky than good, which was the situation you encountered by being given the after hours royal tour in and around the venerable aircraft, Bill. Fine and colorful collage depicting the ins and outs of the ship: the cockpit, cabin, nose, etc.
Excellent captures you have put together for this collage!
that real cool for the man to show you stuff like this. got favor with God and man
Lucky stroke, Bill. Great images to document the plane.
Great shots of this airliner!
Super collage Bill and a unique experience for you and Tara.
Great. Simply elegance in flight!
Great collage!!
Thanks for sharing. What an experience! Glad you got the grand treatment so you could see this plane up close.
What a privilage and collage, Bill! Great detail and exposure all round. Thanks for sharing! Clive
WOW ! You were so lucky beeing the last persons in the day. You gor mighty beautiful shots.
Yup. There is one in the Smithsonian. Despite it was a ground breaking aircraft they were contracted to a single airline while Douglas models were open for anybody who wanted an airline aircraft. Something like the difference between Betamax and VHS. Of course Boeing recovered and made some of the most famous aircraft flying.
Great captures and info.
Thats great Bill. You did something that I rarely ever do with these old planes....get to go inside! Well done.
Love looking inside too, there isn't much room :o( but LOVE the curtains. A good day for you both!!!!
Excellent photography....
Dude! You lucky ........! What can I say... Just amazing, once in a lifetime shots! One thing... Does make you wonder why they are going to hang this airworthy beauty up from a ceiling, instead of showing it off around at shows! That is a shame! One other bit of good timing Bill... lol You know Shoo Shoo Baby.. The B-17 at Dayton, well its not going to be there for very much longer! Its going to Washington! Hows that! Great shots... Rob
The GOLDEN age ! ten seats? a private plane by todays standard.I wonder what a ticket cost back then.A great collage Bill, and testiment to time and place, as you say.I'm with Rob, why hang an airworthy plane? but I'm sure there is a good reason.
Nicely done collage; while groundbreaking in its time, it sure looks rough by today's standards. Not sure how I'd feel about luggage bumping around in those nets overhead when you hit turbulence!
Oh man. This is like being there again, seeing these images! That was the best time. You did a fantastic job of showing off this gorgeous plane ... you got all the angles and really did it up right! Excellent collage, and thanks for the memories!
How exciting to see inside!
marvelous!!! very Indy Jones's like?! ;-D!!
fascinating experience and a very interesting plane!
