Description
A motorcycle displayed at the Chief Crazy Horse Memorial. The painting on the gas tank is what the Memorial is supposed to look like when it is completed.
In my last upload, "Chief Crazy Horse", I forgot to include the sculptor's name. Korczak Ziolkowski is the original sculptor. He worked under Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mt. Rushmore. He started the carving of Chief Crazy Horse in 1948. When he died in 1982, his wife and 10 children continued on with the work.
Someone asked what the white markings on the rock were(in Chief Crazy Horse). It is where they are working on the horses head. You can see it looks like the shape of the horses ear and forehead.
I much prefer the art on the Motorcycle to the carving in the rock :)
Thanks for looking!
Hugs,
~Melinda~

So Very AWESOME!!! Great shot! I hope I get to see the memorial in my life time! It's Beautiful! Fantastic shot!
I have been disappointed in the progress of this sculpture. It doesn't seem to have any importance and the funding is so slim. To the native people of this land, it means a great deal but apparently that isn't the majority of people because it keeps stalling. I dream of living long enough to see it completed but I fear that will happen only in my great grandchildren's time.
beautiful bike and art.you capture really works for me
Beautiful capture...love the sharp focus and the artistry of the gas tank painter.
belle décoration !! jolie photo.
a work of art showing a work of art
The first was, I believe, a picture difficult to achieve, given the abundance of light, which creates many reflections on the bike itself also hampered the staging of the paint tank. Everything you see on your plate! Bravo for the idea ... your mechanics will find their account with the engine cylinder 'V'! Very nice exposure. Thank you.
First off, I must say that rock-carving hubris is very human...I suspect that the Mount Rushmore artists were thinking along the lines of the ancient Egyptians in terms of carving monuments to themselves. Oh, they're pretending it's for patriotism and such, but honestly, the artist is remembered as much as the artwork and so a certain measure of immortality is inherent in such an undertaking. Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial are probably intended to one-up the ancient Egyptians. At least that's my take...and like you, I prefer more subtle displays of artistry. Less boastful aspects of it as both memorials overlook reservations! It's rather like aliens coming to earth, conquering humanity and then erecting a monstrosity to commemorate themselves AND a human hero whose likeness was never captured. Okay, now that I've ranted, I have to say that I love gas tank art in all of its forms. Something about the gas tank of a crotch rocket...um...I mean a motorcycle is quite appealing to me. I guess because they're such intriguing surfaces to begin with and they're just calling out for some form of individualizing art to be placed on them. In terms of this particular capture, I like it quite a lot. The chrome engine bits and the tank itself, emblazoned with air-brushed Native American-ness really rocks in a way that I also see as distinctly American, in the best possible way. It's giddy. It's functional. It is very well done, and your capture of this is engaging. Great work.
Stellar myriad of reflections, effects and textures in this one, Melinda. The tank itself looks like a cameo.
Beautiful work!
