Description

Although this is not sharp, I really like it because it reminds me of being at the back of the stands at a tennis match or an outdoor concert. You can hear them murmuring to each other if you get close enough! Now known as Coprinellus disseminatus, this small and very fragile inkcap is found in dense swarms on dead wood. The cap is up to 1.2cms across and the stipe can be up to 4cms. It is widespread and common. I have more pics of this to share, as it is one of my favourites!

In answer to Andrew About coprinus fungi. These little chaps are probably not worth it, but the much larger Coprinus comatus, Lawyers wig or Shaggy inkcap is delicious when young, before it starts to autodigest. BUT I believe all this family contain the chemical found in antabuse, the drug given to folk trying to break alcohol dependency, and so if eaten, say, in a lovely stew made with wine, they will induce appalling nausea!

Something in your gallery sent me out onto the web to learn more about mushrooms, and I discovered that those who do mushroom ID take something called a "spore print." Fascinating stuff. The things one learns by hanging out here! These little guys are quite attractive, and I can see why you like them. I had no idea a mushroom could react with alcohol in that way. Another new thing! Did I remember to tell you I like this photograph? The pano crop makes for a lovely image!
