Description
Imagine my surprise and then my anger as I realized that the rose bush I had planted and babied for well over a year, had been chopped down! The man next door who was cutting his overgrown backyard decided to chop my bush and one tree as well. The bush as you can see had been tied to the fence and the area its in is our property not his. Well believe this, as soon as I calmed down I went over there and did not mince words when I told him he had no right to cut something on my property.
Maintenance then roped off our side that isn't fenced in and I dared the man to cross that area again! I didn't ask him to replace the bush but I did in no uncertain terms let him know that he lost a friend, a friend that watches his backyard for vandals. I guess I am still a bit angry, I just don't understand why, the bush had roses on it so it could not have been mistaken for a weed!

What an idiot!!, I admire your tact and diplomacy, I'd have reciprocated and chopped his entire garden down and left a note saying "there ya go turd wipe, pick the bones outa that!" LOL
Not so sure I would have been as calm about it as you Lynn, and I'm also not too sure the reason he cut it was it was mistaken for a weed. You did the right thing in approaching him or who knows what bounds he would have crossed next.

Yen yang. Disaster or opportunity. Roses like a good pruning from time to time. If your neighboor didn't yank it out by the roots it could be a good time for a trellis. Life is what you make it. So let the sun shine on your next bloom. ;-)

That really is a bad event, I know I would have cried after all that work. I hope he gets a concience and replaces the rose and the tree.

Ok, a little birdie told me about this and I am sorry I missed it. It was not a good time to cut it like this. And there is not much to do with it but love it back to life. When they grow hybrid roses, they graft the desired rose to the roots of a wild rose, which is sturdier and stronger than the hybrids. So, two things could happen. Either the damage is far enough above the graft and it will begin to put out small sprouts from the trunk, or the damage was done too close to the graft and from the roots a wild climbing rose will appear. I dug out 3 roses from a spot that was not good for them... I dug them out deeply and I thought got all the roots but a small piece much have remained on each. Last month I had to redig three roses out of that same spot. They grew from pieces of root left behind. I feel badly for this one but hopefully it is a survivor. So sorry you had to go through this.
