Description

Chiricahua National Monument is part of the Coronado National Forest which contains the Chiricahua Mountains and nearby Cochise Head & Sugarloaf mountain. It is also surrounded by the Chiricahuan and Sonoran Deserts. These mountains are where the Apaches lived. It is a great place to hike, with strange and unique rock formations. But there are no visible signs left of the Apache sacred grounds. This view is from the top, looking down towards the desert. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments. Dana

This terrain was a principle reason the Apaches lived here...it was difficult to get around in if you weren't familiar with it, and it provided many places to build strongholds or to hide in. During the 1860 - '70s this area provided a refuge for the Apache tribe led by two of the greatest chiefs, Cochise and Geronimo, and it was from here that they launched the last major attacks on white settlers. They were finally driven out of the rocks and defeated in 1886. The Apache were the last nation to hold out and fight for the right to live free... I don't know about you, but I'd hate to try and sneak up on someone living out here...:-)

Hey Dad, the POD looks NW towards Mt. Graham or Kennedy Peak in the Galiuro Mtns, the range just west of Graham. If the POD is due west then its the Dragoon Mtns. The home of Cochise Stronghold. Cochise Stronghold Canyon lies at the heart of the Dragoon mountains. It is from this beautiful woodland that Cochise and his band of Apaches carried out their raids and sometimes the Ciricahua mountains.
