Description

May 1990, snow shoeing in the Canadian Rockies, somewhere between Jasper and Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. As I get closer to the car, I turned to check out the area that I have crossed. I have two choices. Take a photo or get into the car. Keep in mind that I can’t get into the car with the snowshoes on. As you can see, I took the photo first and made it into the car. But as the Grizzly “marked” the front of the car, I realized that my camera was on the roof. A couple of blasts of the car horn and off he went. No real danger since I could have driven off, if he tried to get in. It was a rental after all. I must tell you that the drive back to Edmonton was kind of tough. As the radiator heated up, the bear’s urine had a powerful stink. Male grizzly bears can reach weights of more than 1,000 pounds (450 kg), but more typically weigh 400 pounds (180 kg) to 770 pounds (350 kg). The females are on average 38% smaller, at about 250–350 pounds (114–160 kg). On average, grizzly bears stand about 1 meter (3.3 ft) at the shoulder. You need to know that the snow had a hard crust on the surface, so that every time the bear tried to run at me, his weight would break through the crust. The show shoes kept me from doing that so I could keep a good distance. No real danger here for me. Dana

That's a great clear picture zoomed! Having had one bear experience, and not a Grizzly either, I think I wouldn't want a closer experience than this. They can knock a windshield out with one swipe. On the positive side, think of all the other animals that would stay away from that smell - it's great insurance against other bears, ha ha!

Gripping story Dana, I do alot of hiking out here, sometimes alone, and I always worry about bears when I am out alone. For the most part they leave people alone, but there are always reported incidents where they don't, I guess the lesson here is to respect their space. Whatever happened to the camera on the roof?

Dana, you know how to live dangerously! Great story, you obviously kept a cool head to shoot this one! Love the contrast between bear and snow.
