Description
Rock Hyrax (Dassie, Rock Rabbit)
Order Hyracoidea - Procavia Capensis
The Rock Hyrax is a diurnal animal - meaning it is active during the day. They have family groups of four to eight individuals. Rock Hyraxes can be seen in the early morning sun, basking before extended grazing among the vegetation.
Feeding takes place mostly in the early morning and late afternoon. Food includes leaves, flowers, fruit and bark. Adults keep a watchful eye, uttering a sharp cry when danger approaches.
Each colony has a strict pecking order of an adult male, with females and their young. A litter usually consists of 1 to 3 young, weighing between 150 and 300 grams. Adult arange from 2.5kg to 4.7kg.
The dassie is the African elephant's closest living relative, in spite of the size difference. This close evolutionary relationship is deduced from similarities in the structure of the feet and teeth.
I took this shot out in Betty's Bay, Western Cape, last weekend. They are quite 'tame', also frequenting Table Mountain.
Enjoy!
Clive
In answer to 'tuxedoj' he/she just popped up on a rock next to a boardwalk, literally meters away. The zoom did help too!

I am reading little books to my toddler grandsons these days. The main way we grandparents learn new animals is if they appear in childrens' books. So, I thank you for adding another little critter to my knowledge base:)
