Description

JS had returned to the Regiment for just two days when the commanding officer summoned him: "I was ordered to accompany you to the Lookout, the President's summer residence in Venice ASAP." When they arrived in the huge hall of the palace, his commander told JS he had to go on alone: "Good luck, Sea!". JS saluted and moved along the shimmering corridors. He was showed in by one of the anonymous employees the place was teeming with. The most famous room in the summer residence, the Lookout, which allowed the view of St. Mark's Square, presented JS a breathtaking sight. Inside there were the President, GOD's commander-in-chief herself, the head director of all ETHIC agencies, and 3TC. The view of the Earth's empyrean dignitaries obscured the architectural treasures. "Good work, lieutenant - said the President, waiving at a chair situated at GOD's right side. "OMG, your intel gives us the chance to grasp and squeeze the balls of a number of people... GUN and those SOBs in Aldebaran. Always ready to look down their noses at you, they are, and lecture about ethics..." he closed his mouth, either embarassed by ETHIC's Iron Lady's icy glance or lost in his babbling dreams. JS could not tell. "Obviously, all of it is strictly confidential," ETHIC stated flatly. "The President decided to award you a Golden Cross," GOD added. "Yes! the reason will be posthumous, but you can wear it," the President spluttered, stirring himself from his day-dreaming. A lull in the great man's word flux, was interrupted by an almost imperceptible jerk of 3TC's head. "My dear lad, -the President went on - I need a favor. I know you should get a period of leave, but PIG has given special dispensation just for this occasion..." He stared at JS almost lovingly and dropped the bomb: "Well, as I was saying... I'd like you to take off for New Mars immediately as the planet's new commanding officer with jurisdiction also on the civilians." "Since you deal well with the natives, you'll be able to observe the movements of the Rogues and report to us," ETHIC remarked. "During the period spent on New Mars you'll have the rank of lieutenant commander, with the pension and the benefits of the rank, of course!" the President added jovially. JS thought that, when the words posthumous and pension were pronounced almost in the same sentences, it usually was a bad omen. "GOD didn't agree, - 3TC murmured confidentially, - but the President convinced them that during exceptional times we need exceptional measures." JS chained his eyes with GOD's and knew that she meant his loyalty was nailed to his Trimurti: "Regiment, Country, GOD". JS nodded imperceptibly and GOD relaxed. "Well, what do you say?" the President asked him, adding: "We prefer you'll volunteer. PIG insists on it." Since New Mars was situated on the first impact area, obviously the idea was that a position on New Mars was a way of ridding of him "cleaner" than a car accident. JS pretended to think about the proposal a few minutes, when instead he couldn't wait to leave for New Mars. With the powers of a commander, he could do better than dying. "Mr. President and myself, as a personal gift, because of your merits on the field, we add a small property close to the land you already own." ETHIC's voice was soft and cajoling. "They seem very sure I won't come back to collect," JS thought. "Promoveatur ut amoveatur, then (Promote to remove)." He waited for just a few seconds of silence interrupted only by Spectre's purr, and then replied: "I accept, Mr. President." Everybody grinned, stretched the lips or grimaced according to everybody's habits. Thank you to all people who appreciated the previous picture! Thank you for viewing and drop a note if you like!
