Description
Shiprock is the basalt core of an extinct volcano that erupted around 30 million years ago. It is roughly about 500m in diameter and rises about 600m above the surrounding terrain. The peak is 7178-ft. high.
It is considered sacred by the Navajo who call it Tse Bitai (The Winged Rock).
In the left foreground is a dike. A dike is a near-vertical wall-like body formed by the spreading apart of a vertical rock fracture. Dikes are commonly the conduits by means of which magma reaches the surface. Magma entering in the overlaying rock solidifies in a branching network of thin veins.
There are several dikes spreading out from the Shiprock core.
This picture was taken on 4 November 2003.

Beautiful! Where is it located???
Good capture and thanks for sharing the background.
No wonder that the Navajo consider these places sacred. I have seen photos of shiprock before but did not understand the size and scope. Nor the history of the formation. Very well done - photo and history. Dana
