Description
From November 15, 1855 until March 23, 1891 this lighthouse provided navigational aid to mariners at this location. The crest stood 422-ft. above sea level. In clear weather the light from the Fresnel lens could be seen 39 miles out to sea.
But this location concealed a serious flow. Often fog or low clouds obscured the light so a new lighthouse was constructed at the bottom of the hill.

Nice photo with some interesting history. Putting a lighthouse on top of a high hill or mount would seem to the perfect idea but for the other factors not known or considered or taken into account at the time. Just goes to show experience can be the best teacher and what seems like a good idea is not always so bright.
