Description
Standing on 'The Corner' in Winslow, Arizona. This is the famous 'Route 66' - US 66. For decades this route was the main East-West highway through the central United States. This route was used by Oklahomans during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl Days of the 1930's to migrate west to California.
It was made famous by John Steinbeck's book 'The Grapes of Wrath' and the subsequent 1940 movie of the same title directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda.
Route US 66 fell into disuse after the building of Interstate 40 in the 1960's. But there are still some fabulous stretches of this classic route in Arizona, especially between Seligman and Kingman.
This picture was taken on 22 February 2009.

Some very cool history there Sig!! Some favourites of mine..
Sig, you did a great job on your filmology as far as you went but you missed listing the TV program most watched in the early 60s..."Route 66", starring Martin Milner and George Maharis, their Corvette and featureing the theme song with the words, "Come along for the ride and get your kicks on Route 66."
Very nice! a great road and a great trip: people and landscapes are priceless!
VERY cool !

ROUTE 66 IS MYTHICAL! AND i ESPECIALLY LOVE THOSE SHOPS YOU CAN FIND IN THE WEST (OF THE USA)!!!
Very nice place..great capture Sig! :)
"Watching all the girls go by"---great shot of this classic scene. When I was a kid, we lived in Phoenix and every summer drove to California. This was before Interstate 10 was built and we went thru all kinds of towns just like this. Thanks for the memory!!
love the atmosphere of this picture. It reminds me my vacations in Arizona :-)

Great capture, but you did not give props to the Eagles for singing about standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona.....
I saw the turn off to Winslow but missed it... But it was a fast travel day out to Flagstaff and back. :-) Now I'm sorry I missed it. Great shot.
Absolutely fantastic capture, and interesting place. I have only heard of it through the Eables song, Take it easy, and had no idea it was a real place, or thet it was on route 66! Bravo & Thanks
