Description
The Phelps Dodge copper smelter in San Manuel, in the San Pedro River Valley, Arizona. At one time this was the biggest copper mine in the country. Phelps Dodge used to be sneaky about the pollution and only cranked up the emissions during the night and during inclement weather. Someone forgot to lower the emissions output on this otherwise clear morning.
The mine closed in 1999 with the loss of over 2,000 jobs and the more than 500-ft. high stacks were brought down in 2007.
This picture was taken in fall 1984 and later scanned.

great foto.
Great image. Good shot!!!
Whoa. Great picture to bring back memories. I remember when Pittsburg's steel mills used to look like that years and years ago. In 1950 my father was driving us through Pittsburg on a trip from Ohio to New York in a 1941 Ford...the condenser on the distributor died and so did the car. Black soot fell on us when we got out of the car in the middle of the city. Glad those years are behind us.
