Hi, for Valentine's day with all my love for my RR friends what's better than something about Juliet and Romeo? Montecchio Maggiore is a town in the hilly area of the province of Vicenza,that has been inhabited since the late Stone Age. The two castles built about 975 were erected possibly on Roman fortresses on a very important road, to collect taxes. Then they became Lombard fortresses when this German tribe invaded Northern Italy and founded a kingdom after the fall of the Roman Empire. During the 14th and 15th centuries the castles went on the hands of the La Scala lords of Verona (hence the story of Romeo and Juliet), then they were conquered by the Visconti until they became Venetians, until the end of the 18th century. Luigi da Porto of Vicenza, commander in the Serenissima (Venice) army and original poet, set the story of Juliet and Romeo here in his novel of 1552 getting the two family names Montecchi (Montague) and Cappelletti/Capuleti (Capulets) from Dante. The undying myth of Romeo and Juliet, considered the most romantic love story of all times, is authentically rooted in Vicenza's territory. The novel, that tells about the unfortunate love story between two young noble people, Juliet and Romeo, is set in the hills of Vicenza, with the two face-to-face castles in Montecchio, that were visible from the Da Porto house in Montorso Vicentino, forming the background of the story. The great dramatist William Shakespeare was inspired by this novel and he made it famous in 1597. The legend wants in fact that the two young people belonged one to the family of the Capuleti and the other to that of Montecchi, implacable enemies. The two castles in Montecchio Maggiore are Il Castello della Villa and Il Castello di Bellaguardia. Il Castello della Villa (on the right in the photo, looking at the screen) is said to have been owned by the Montague family. In other words, it is Romeo's castle. And Il Castello di Bellaguardia is said to have been owned by the Capulets. It is Juliet's castle. Although the story is set in the nearby Verona, the castles had a part in it. Here's the view from the bottom of the hills the two castles occupy. Nowadays one has a restaurant and the other an open theater for summer shows.
