Description
The Ponte Vecchio is a medieval bridge that crosses the Arno River at its narrowest point in Florence, Italy. The bridge was originally occupied by butcher shops, but the present tennants are jewellers, art dealers, and souvenir sellers. The bridge has been described as Europe's oldest, wholly-stone, closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge. It is believed that a bridge was first built in Roman times when the Via Cassia crossed the river at this point.
The bridge first appears in a document of 996. After being destroyed by a flood in 1117 it was reconstructed in stone but swept away again in 1333. It was rebuilt in 1345.
The bridge was the only one of six spared by the retreating Germans on 4 August 1944 (Wikipedia).
This picture was taken from the left downstream bank on 11 July 2007.

Beautiful place and fantastic photo.
Excellent scene Sig!
Great shot! Beautiful!
BEAUTIFUL CAPTURE :)
Yup, I was there when they blew the bridges (3 years old), in one of the yellow houses on the left of the bridge (a small hotel). On the 5th with my mother I crossed the river on the ruins of the fallen S.Trinita bridge, to join my father, who was with the allies on the other side; there was little water in the river ...
Fantastic shot!!!!
Fanstastic photo
Like that green vine of leaves just above center part of the bridge. Excellent. Aloha
Merveilleuse Italie, jolie photo!
excellent close-up of this area of the bridge!
Excellent capture my friend.
great foto.
Very cool :)
ein sehr interessantes und wunderschönes Foto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a very interesting, historic piece accompanied by a fine photo. The Arno has caused some great floods in the past. It is something that this bridge has withstood all the forces of nature and man since 1345.
beautiful capture of this wonderful old bridge....loved Florence when I was there but not the crowds....bought Rebeah a wonderful hand smocked dress from a little shop on the bridge....your picture has brought back some happy memories for me

Awesome view, great capture!
superb sig! brings back memories of college days when you were in danang and i was in venice.
Standing on that ivy-covered balconey would be like living a dream. It is so beautiful. I wonder what would happen around here if someone proposed building a bridge with shops on it where people walked and did not allow traffic... probably a revolt! :-)
nice POV of this famous place ! Love the balconey
It is an original and good-looking place. Water looks like soup ;D
