ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English
Definition: 'The Community'
A Language English* description for the collection of known spacefaring civilizations scattered across the galaxy. It includes all levels of biological, social and technological evolution and age ranges as young as 5000 years to as old as 8.2 billion years. Membership is informal and subject to interpretation between differing civilizations. There are no formal or common qualifications, treaties or laws**. The status of "spacefaring" is often used as a qualifier simply because it is at this stage that a civilization is most likely to be detected by others. And there is no record of a civilization being detected by another prior to reaching the space flight age.
Formal contacts between different civilizations is selective, intermittent at best and not universal. This is not just due to the great separation in space between many civilizations but also because of the intellectual gulf. The older and/or more advanced civilizations (sometimes referred to as 'Reds') take only a scientific interest in more junior civilizations*** and endevour to not interfere or become involved with them**. A formal association of all worlds would not be practical.
As of the issue of this edition, Community membership numbers no less than forty-eight (48) confirmed civilizations. A further seven (7) are regarded unconfirmed**** and another two (2) are regarded as questionable*****. Again, these determinations vary from one civilization to another.

Clayton this is a really stunning image you've created my friend, one that really is a show stopper. Full view is a must to soak it all in and catch the details. Your Encyclopedia Galactica write up was superb, really convincing. And with formal contact being selective even this far in the future it sounds a bit like it is now in some cases.

As much as I like the image (which is arguably one of the best space scene interpretations posted at Renderosity IMHO) I tip my hat over the great text, which is wonderful. Imaginative and engaging, precise yet expansive. Altogether an excellent contribution!

This is extremely good work on every level; the visual component is top nothc--as show stopper as it's been called above. I particularly love the text that accompanies it, and hope to see more entries from this fascinating realm. I love the attention to detail, both artistic and "sociological" and so much of it rings true in so many ways. Excellent work!

Thank you for letting me know about you previous Encyclopedia Galactica posts. I have had a wonderful time reading them tonight. I read the 11 and I decided to go back and reread and stop at the point where the volume of what I wanted to write would begin to exceed my ability to remember. That happened on # 2 which might give you an indication on my memory capacity. I love the way you have built your uploads and the structure of them. I felt like I was on a computer some time in the distant future looking things up and, as often happens to me, finding each thing I looked up just made me more curious and the search went on and on. If there really was an Encyclopedia Galactica, I wouldn’t be writing this now. I’d still be deep in the computer trying to find as much as I could about the civilizations of Gardener, Isis and Sagittarius Red. I like the set up of this reality, with civilizations of different advancements steering clear of each other. It’s a basically orderly (though informally so) existence but with wonderful opportunity for the odd and fascinating interaction between species, especially with the activity of the Gardeners and the Sagittarius Red. Beautiful images! I love the variously textured planets. I’ll be back to comment on latter uploads. Great read! I’m enjoying it tremendously.
