Description
Have you ever come upon a handsome scene something like this and asked, "Why?" Or, "I wonder what used to be here?"
This photo was taken Nov. 1, 2008 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Fall colors are at their peak...a week from now, we'll be knee deep in leaves.
These trees outline the former right-of-way for The Kansas City, Leavenworth and Western Railway tracks. This was an interurban railway that operated between Kansas City, Missouri, and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, between 1900 and 1938.
I have an old postcard collection. One card shows these trees as saplings circa 1905-1910.
For those interested, Google "Interurban +Leavenworth" and you will find more information to include pictures of the electric passenger cars of the time.
Thank you for all your comments and favorites concerning my recent postings.
Have a great weekend or what's left of it :-)

Beautiful place and fantastic photo.
Fine photo and a great description to put everything in context.
How interesting! The view is lovely. I never would have guessed!
Stunning path that I wouldn't mind taking a walk on! Lovely image Bill!
I have a small postcard collection of interesting places too. Its so wonderful to be able to go to one of the places on those cards and see how things have changed. This is wonderful. We have a double rose of huge palms that stretch through a neighborhood here and it used to be the drive to a very large and well-to-do family back about 1900. Great shot.
Stunning!! Makes me want to be walking down through there...NICE post!! :-)
Nice to find old railbeds, here many are marked with signs and have become walking trails. Excellent capture and information.
Great capture and interesting information, thanks Bill
It pains me to have to say this, but some of the most prettiest landscaping, in the US, is on old "Army" Posts. And you, Sir, capture it with a good eye and fine camera marksmanship. Skipper62
Lovely photo. And once again, great and interesting history lesson! Thanks for both my friend. Rob. (And I read your comment. Many thanks, my friend. Strange, same date!)
It looks like it would be a beautiful walk. Great picture and information. Thanks for sharing.
Bill, this is beautiful! And I love the history you place with the images to inform us...I love how the trees seem to make an umbrella over the path. Beautiful fall colors as well...a fav with me!
Fascinating and also a beautiful pic!
a beautiful place !
A very nice photo. Interesting info.
Lovely capture, it looks like a wonderful place to walk.
We lost the last of the leaves last week and it's sad to see them so bare after looking so colourful. What a perfect place for a long peaceful walk and what a history. Thanks for posting Bill and the suggested link.
a beautiful place !
A wonderful, tranquil scene. There are many extinct railway cuttings round here, their past recalled by still soot blackend bridges. Great capture and interesting info.
Wonderful capture and scene with shade and light, Excellent well done..
A so stunning photograph!
At first glance I would have said this had been a horse, carriage and/or jogging path in days of yore. Excellent POV, DOF, clarity, greenery, lighting effects and perspective in this beautiful capture, Bill!
THATS A REAL BEAUTY NOT LESS ;-)
Great colors..POV....and history...
very interesting and a lovely shot, Bill
What an inviting view...Now I see why my husband is so keen on Kansas. Thanks for the info.
