Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held image.
I have posted images of lots of different spiders and I am quite fascinated with them. They come in many sizes, colors, and shapes. Of the hundreds of species which I am sure are within the confines of my property (25 acres), there are only two species which are actually potentially dangerous. These are Black Widows and Brown Recluses but even though I do not handle those, none of them make me feel squeamish in the least.
I cannot say the same about this Spider, lol. I have not been able to get an ID for it yet, but I do know it is a crab spider. Why does it make me a bit unsettled? Let me count the ways, lol.
1.) It is bigger than any crab spider I have ever seen before. Crab spiders as a rule are pretty small (3-12mm, 1/8 – 1/2”)and rather flattish. This one was at least 18-20mm (5/8-3/4”) long and quite plump.
2.) Crab spiders are normally quite nicely colored with nice patterns. This one was a mottled raw meat color, lol.
3.) Most crab spiders have an air of excitement and curiosity and foolish fearless bravado about them. This one looked sullen, solemn and, his fearlessness seemed more creditable, lol.

Its really magnificent! The spider and the capture... Look at that full butt and that textured skin. I really like these views and its one of the most interesting spiders I've seen in a long time.
This is so cool, it almost looks plastic, but I am not sticking my hand down there to find out!!! Nice Photo!!!
Oh I love your description of this critter! It does seem to fit the bill. I like spiders to a point, but I have to agree this one kinda gives me the willies. Incredible capture to say the least!
really a big crab spider! Wonderful photos! The crab spiders here are max. 10 mm....
Wow... that is a meaty spider. Great shot.
He certainly looks a thug! Your description and pics are superb!
Very pretty. We have Redbacks here in Aust that are almost the same as Black Widows, but they have a red stripe on their back. They don't scare me cos they just hang in their webs and do nothing. Funnelwebs on the hand are the creation of the devil!!! They are angry, aggressive, deadly and down right scary. They can even hold their breath for hours. Many people here get bittern when they fish the spiders out of the pool, thinking they have drowned. http://www.virginmedia.com/images/funnelweb-431x300.jpg
