Description
Picture was taken from Hells Gate (elev. 2,262-ft) which is located along highway 374. View is toward the south.
Death Valley is an example of the Basin and Range topography of the American Southwest.
On 10 July 1913 a temperature of 134F (56.7C) was recorded at Furnace Creek (178-ft. below sea level). This is the highest temperature ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere.
This picture was taken on 23 September 2008.

I love this place and would love to spend more time there.when you go back on the less traveled trails it is like you are alone in the world.beautiful vista Sig

@Richardphotos. I agree Richard. This was my forth time to this place. I didn't want to go off the paved surfaces with my BMW this time, but in 1973 and 1985 I had a VW bug and I explored all the unpaved areas. It was December and January respectively, so it was a little cooler. When I had a Nissan truck some years later I did it again. This place is awe inspiring, but deadly. I have never been there in summer - and have no desire to go there during that time of year! Phoenix is hot enough!

Great capture - awesome sky! Didn't get to visit this one either, but read a really great romance novel by that title years ago (Janelle Taylor was a favorite novelist of mine when I had time and the eyes to read - lol).

What an astonishing shot! I traveled the area couple of years aback, took quite a few pictures there myself. Perhaps one day I shall post some also.

Just ran across this great image. Several days ago I think I mentioned I was a Lieutenant in the Army not far from Death Valley (Fort Irwin). It happened to be in a tank battalion. Can you imagine seeing further than you could shoot? It doesn't happen in many places in the world but it does here in the Mojave Desert. Brings back old memories. Bill
