Description
I took these yesterday at an area lake. I was able to walk right up the bird very slowly to within 20 feet.it was not as large as the one I seen last week, but getting so close was a surprise.
the pixelation was caused by reducing the pixels so I could keep the large size
I think it is a Heron, but the more I read about Egrets and Herons, the more confusing it seems

From my experience these birds can be quite skittish. Like you I have gotten up close but not an easy thing most the time. Great photo!

I tend to agree with the consensus its a heron, whether blue green or pink with dots an heron, keep it away from my fish. Excellent montage of shots Richard, I have yet to get a decent shot of one of these, they land on the neighbours roof from time to time, and I've only managed the one shot and that wasn't good. I must say you have done a brillient job yourself. Bravo!!!!!

Wow - you have to zoom in on this to really see the full impact of these pictures. Amazing detail and wonderful photos. Really cool series of shots showing the bird in flight. Yeah, it is kind of difficult distinguishing a heron from an egret. I think a heron may be bigger but I could be wrong. :)
