This is the last image my “mystery theme” week, which was “critters with the word fly in their names”, lol. MrsLubner and Gimi53 essentially came up with the correct answer although neither really nailed it precisely. However, I award full points to both, lol.
Kingdom Animalia (Animals)
Phylum Arthropoda (Arthropods)
Class Insecta (Insects)
Order Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths)
Superfamily Papilionoidea (Butterflies)
Family Nymphalidae (Brushfooted Butterflies)
Subfamily Apaturinae (Emperors)
Genus Asterocampa
Species clyton (Tawny Emperor)
Wingspan 4-7 cm
Similar to Hackberry Emperor, but rusty-brown above, darker below. Has small iridescent patches instead of eyespots below.
Adults take fluid from dung, rotting fruit, carrion. Like the Hackberry Emperor, this butterfly is "friendly", and likes to perch on sweaty humans.
Larvae feed on Hackberry.
Males perch in sunny locations to watch for females.
Caterpillars over winter in groups.
I don’t see many species of Butterflies and I don’t get many captures of any I do see, but this was an exception, it is new species for me and I managed to get a couple of decent shots of it.
Last year at about this same time, I got my first images of a Hackberry Emperor Butterfly when it landed on me while I was sitting near my pond and I assumed it was interested in the watermelon juice that was on my fingers at that time. This Tawny Emperor also landed on me as I was sitting near the pond (no watermelon involved) and after reading info on it, I have decided it was my sweat they were both after, lol. In fact I thought this Tawny Emperor was the same species as the Hackberry Emperor and it was not until I downloaded the image and looked through my reference books that I determined it was a related but different species.
Thanks to those who took the time to comment and also to those who participated in the guessing game.

What a great shot!!! Your capture is fantastic. One can see so much detail.
lee outstanding work. you must have some magnetic output to get them to land on you twice... I have never seen a perfect species like the little fellow you have here... I take my hat off to you again... beyond words
YEA! Me and Gimi53! And ya know what, Lee? your theme taught everyone who had guesses a little more about the insects you presented - not just what you put in your comments but the information gathered in finding that common thread. I love this butterfly shot. The side shot is really special and shows off some of the best, usually unseen, parts.
….again completely extraordinarily good photos! A very pretty butterfly! How do you make that the insects on always your hand “land”?
great shot..
Wonderful shots!!! And the theme was so much more straightforward than I thought!!! LOL! Have you tried making a lure by painting some wood or soaking some rope or somesuch with wine or honey, or rum treacle and sugar? I haven't yet, but I'm going to try it to attract some moths.
You said we were all over guessing Lee and you were spot on with that, I was looking much deeper, I did say I would hit myself and I have, just smacked the forehead and duh! Not only do we have a fantastic shot of the Butterfly but a full set of fingerprints as well. Excellent clarity and detail, I especially like the one with folded wings, the zoomed version is just awesome. Outstanding work. Bravo!!!!!
Looks like he is your pet. Great shot
I have one capture of a butterfly that I managed to get set on my hand....not an easy feat. Your captures are great!
Beautiful shot!
Sneaky. Simple but complex. Excellent riddle. These are splendid captures. The second is like its sitting up at attention to show its best side. Bunny
Fascinating narrative and great shots. How lucky to have one land on you and great work getting the shot one handed, I would have been too excited to hold the camera still!
...and I nearly guessed that... oh well :) nice shot - I'm always amazed how you get these things to perch on you... well done.
Beautiful!!! JDoc
I think you use some special bait to get them on your hands to take such beautyful shots. Great work.
Yeah we all were thinking far too deep for the theme lol, been a great series!
Very good shots.
Stunning macro. Strong clarity !!! POV and presentation is marvelous !! :) 5***
