Here are two views of the French S35 tank that show how the good folks at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland are taking care of their collection. The S35 was the best French tank available in 1940. The Germans used S35 in the Balkans during WWII.
Background tanks in the top photo include a Soviet JS III and a German early model Mark IV which has been refurbished. In the bottom photo a British Sherman "Firefly" which has also been refurbished, as well as a Renault R35 French tank that has been refurbished and two German Panthers are seen.

Nice photo, I didn't realize the French had a tank with even remotely sloped armor in that war. It does look like the German Panzers certainly out-classed these things, though. It's really interesting to see how well these machines are holding up, considering they're sitting outdoors!

The story of the French tanks is tragic as the heavy ones did not really exist. The story line continues with the Stryker. Anything that succeeds in war is quickly removed from service as too expensive and unecessary.

They still look pretty intimidating but it is obvious to see how the armament just increased dramatically in later years when recoil systems had been improved. Excellent collection of captures.

This tank was a good one for 1940. It was one of the first tanks to have "cast" rather than "riveted" armor. The 47mm gun was adequate to take on German PZKW IIs, IIIs, and Czech built 38T types - the standard German 1940 tanks. The PZKW IV was just entering service in '40 and the Panther was still 3 years down the line. A drawback in French tank design is that the tank commander was also the gunner. The tanks had a 3 man crew. The real problem with Allied tanks in 1940 was that the French and British didn't know how to use them as well Germans did
