Description
The day was ending, and we were travelling in car in the Trinidad area (ca. 250 miles or 400km South-East of Habana). I was attracted by these big and heavy grey clouds, which had an egg shape. Suddenly a hole appeared, and the light set the fire to the sky. As always your comments will be greatly appreciated
C’était la fin de la journée et nous étions en voiture dans la région de Trinidad, environ 400km au Sud-Est de La Havane. Mon attention fut attirée par de gros et lourds nuages gris, en forme de sacs ovoïdes. Soudain une trouée apparut, et la lumière inonda le ciel. Vos commentaires seront, comme toujours, les bienvenus.
Techdata: Nikon D50 with Nikkor 3.5-4.5/18-70 Pro ED at 44mm, 1/250s at f/10, ISO 200. I made in fact two picts, the best one having not a sufficient part of ground. Therefore I enlarged the image size to paste the lacking part issued from the second photo into the best one, after a careful matching of landscape detail because the two picts were taken at different focal lengths. Two Ajustment Layers were used, Levels and Exposure, the latter one using the Layer Mask to prevent local burning of the lightest zones. Note: the Exposure Adjustment Layer appears only in Photoshop CS3, with its three sliders it is much easier to use than Curves that you can use in older versions.

Au-delà d'un bon appareil, condition sans laquelle on reste à jouer dans le bac à sable, il faut un regard… et bien que nous nous soyions trouvés à trois photographes impénitents, devant la même scène, toi seule a eu l'idée qui a transformé le jeu de la nature en réalisation artistique. Bravo! Aside from the ownership of a good camera, which is the necessary tool without one stays in the preschool garden, a good eye is an absolute must. In the case of this scene, we were here three advanced photographers, but you were the sole who had the idea to turn this natural hazard into an artistic creation. Congrats!

Very good photograph of this impressive sky and landscape. I've never seen such cloud formations before. The light and mood are fantastic.
These clouds are called Mammatus clouds. Sometimes very ominous in appearance, mammatus clouds are harmless and do not mean that a tornado is about to form; a commonly held misconception. In fact, mammatus are usually seen after the worst of a thunderstorm has passed. Very kewl capture, thanks for posting these beauties! Aloha~
