Description
This Secretary Bird was looking up to a rubber snake that had been thrown up into the air
for him to do his party piece of kicking it to death..
The Secretary Bird, Sagittarius serpentarius, is a large, mostly terrestrial bird of prey. Endemic to Africa, it is usually found in the open grasslands and savannas of the sub-Sahara.
Although a member of the order Falconiformes, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, buzzards, vultures, and harriers, it is so distinctive that it was given its own family, Sagittariidae. Which is earlier than other birds of prey in Emergence apart from the Vultures.
It enjoys a certain fame in Africa, specifically Sudan and South Africa, serving as a prominent emblem on both nations' coats of arms. And I am sure the birds amazing ability to kill snakes may also endear them to many.
Showing the feather crest. The Secretary Bird is instantly recognizable as having an eagle-like body on crane-like legs which increases the birds height to around 1.3 m (4 ft) tall. This 140 cm (4.5 ft) long bird has an eagle-like head with a hooked bill, but has rounded wings. Body weight averages at about 3.3 kg (7.3 lbs) and the wingspan is over 2 m (6.6 ft).

STUNNING!
To our Christmas traditions in Sweden belongs looking at one hour of old Disney film clips at 3 o'clock at Christmas Eve.That starts the Christmas for us, after that we eat the Christmas food. One of the film pieces is about Donald Duck and this secretary bird, who is driving him crazy. We, the grown-ups, love this tradition, from the time when TV was new and Walt Disney too, but the young ones, fed with Disney, just think we are mad. So Danny, it is a treat to see this bird in real life. Of course a fantastic shot of this funny character!
marvellous capture
Great catch and info.
An unusual and terrific pose you captured here, Danny, the light shows his facial features so well. Unique and regal bird he is, and the feather crest and details are superb!
That is just fabulous. What a fascinating bird, and the info you've provided is great. Thanks!
This is an excellent image.
Brilliant image Danny and clever title for it my friend. Thank you as always for all of the details as I know that is a lot of work for you to add them but really helps bring the image to life for me.
What a strikingly beautiful face -- very intent on his snake! Excellent capture, of course!
An awesome capture to be sure, Danny!
GREATTTTTT shot. Your image is as brilliant as your subject. I dream of shots this clean and crisp. I will never get them with my Nikon 7900 coolpix pocket camera, lol. Neither will I ever be able to afford a new setup of comparable quality as your Cannon. I need to start doing some research on "Experienced" equipment. Thanks for sharing. Lee
