Description
Last pic in this little series are a couple of grasing caribous. This was about 10 miles/16 kilometers from the old airbase at Kangerlussuaq/Greenland.
There are a great number of caribous in Greenland, but they appear somewhat shy and stay out of sight, or run off when people come in cars/busses. This couple wasn't so shy, though.
Shortly after this shot was made, the first of the two vehicles on this tour (big-wheel busses) got stuck in a snow slide and had to be dug free ("ok, everyone out..."). During this "rescue mission" the driver must have struck a big rock with the bottom of the vehicle - when we reached the inland ice we found out that the fuel tank had been ruptured and was leaking badly. A rescue vehicle had to be called in via satellite phone, but got stuck during the crossing of a creek. Yet another rescue vehicle had to be called to get the other two vehicles.. In the end everyone were back home at the base before darkness fell. :o)))
