Description
Søndre Strømfjord (just north of the polar circle) is frozen about 10 months of the year. At the time this picture was taken in the first days of May, the ice on the fjord was still about 3 ft/1 meter thick.
Within a month or so the ice would be gone, and ships will then be able to sail supplies all the way up to the landing about 3-4 miles from Kangerlussuaq and the old airbase. Within these two ice-free months a year's supplies must be sailed in. Of course planes can always fly in more and necessary supplies, but it is much to expensive to do in general. Some things will have to be carried in by planes, though, like fruit and dairy products.
The picture was taken when we made a break after 6 miles/10 kilometer sleigh-ride, out in the middle of the ice-covered fjord... the dogs needed a rest before we headed back.
