Description
A small series of pictures from Greenland...
Today's picture is of the Russel Glacier running from the inland ice towards the town of Kangerlussuaq (former US air base, now Søndre Strømfjord). Søndre Strømfjord on the westcoast of Greenland is counted among the longest/deepest fjords in the world. Also, some of the oldest rocks in the world (3+ billion years old) is found close by.
Kangerlussuaq is located in a socalled arctic desert, with very little anual precipitation. This means very few problems with corrosion. The pieces of a US training jet that crashed a few miles outside the town is still today - 40 years later - very well preserved.
The airbase was set up during WW II as "Bluie West Eight" (later "Sondrestrom Air Base"). In 1992 the USAF left and sold the base to Greenland's Home Rule for $ 1. Today it is the most important airport on Greenland and can handle quite large planes like f.ex. the Airbus 330.
