Description
Nikon 7900 pocket camera- hand held images.
I do not see many Black Widows. Maybe just a couple of times a year and those are usually females. This is a Souther Black Widow. We also have a Norther Black Widow and maybe one other species.
This is a male. He is about half the size of the females. This one is about 1/4"(6mm) long.
The things that look like big fat eyeballs on the front of his head are actually engorged pedipalps (little arms). This is a male thing and has reproductive purposes, lol.
The young Black Widows are brown and tan stripped.
Neither the young nor the males are considered venomous and neither bites readily. The mature female does bite more readily (especially if tending egg cases) and is quite venomous.
Thanks tho those who take the time to comment.

This is nothing like our Black Widows and I wouldn't have known this was one if you didn't say so. Its very interesting though and your captures are crystal clear. Thank heavens you didn't try to take a picture of this one on the end of your finger! LOL
outstanding macro work. i love all of your work and info as well. thanks
...wunderbare Spinnen-Aufnahmen? Aber die "schwarze Witwe" ist doch hochgiftig! Und da traust Du Dich ran??
hope you know german? beautiful capture... absolutely love it!!! peace and love
great pics, flora says how daring of you the blackwidow is poisinous! she cant obvious read your comment about that only females are poisinous ;) fur flora: nur die weiber sind giftig.
Great set of images_deadly
This is very different than the Black Widow spiders you see here. Although the red hourglass shape on the abdomen is the same. Great collage.
Spectacular coloration! well done
Superb!!!
Superb trilogy Lee, beautiful markings shown top and underbelly, and as always a wonderful narrative full of information. You really are the king of the little critters, you specialise in none and always try your hardest to identify and tell us all about each and every one. The diversity of the little critters on your 25 acres really amazes me, I think they travel form all over America to live on your homestead. Excellent captures all and wonderful presentation. Bravo!!!!!
Excellent trilogy. I still would not have touched a one... non poisouness or not. Bunny
