Description
Actually it is the transport version of the "Dragon" designated UC-67. This is a pic I took back in the mid-90s when visiting the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio. Didn't scan as well as I would have liked, but this is a rare bird and worth a look.
The Douglas B-23 was an updated version of the B-18 "Bolo" bomber (see page 8 of my gallery). In 1939 the B-23 actually had competitive speed and a good bombload as well as the first tail gun position on a USAAF bomber. The problem was that the design was a bit stale when compared to North American's classic B-25 or Douglas' own DB-7/A-20 light bomber. A look at the plane's shadow will tell any aviation buff that this plane was directly descended from the DC-2/3 airliners of the mid 30s. The result was that only 38 Dragons were built. Most were converted into the UC-67 transport version.
The good news about this particular plane is that the USAF Museum is currently changing it back to its original B-23 mode with the glass bomber nose and tail gun position.

What an elegant lady she is and glad to know she will be restored to former glory. Some reckon this was the most dynamic years of aviation as we know it today. Excellent capture!

Sweet! I'm eternally grateful I actually got to fly on a DC-3 (Trans-Texas Airways) and that a flock of B-25s were stationed at Goodfellow AFB when I was a kid!
