Description
They expected me to finish this puzzle
And there was no illustration, no pieces
Except for some blank segments
There wasn’t even a clear outline
Or the amount of pieces needed
It seemed like an impossible task
But since I had time and nowhere to go
I made up a mental image of my own
Started building the pieces from scratch
Trying to join them together was hard
All pieces seemed attractive enough
Only I had to use force to make them fit
And soon I was left with an abstract
The puzzle even took on three dimensions
As I tried to hit the pieces into place
After thirty two years of trying
On the edge of total insanity
I threw out the whole damned lot
And started anew
Now I began with the central segment
Creating the new pieces very carefully
One by one around the centre I fitted them
Seventeen years later I’m still puzzling
But I no longer look for outlines, a final image
Life taught me that like all others who tried
It can’t be finished anyway

Cool puzzle image to represent your metamorphisis on the way to the freedom and comfort of being..and still a work in progress. I can relate to what you write here, but feel that I have have come full circle in the sense that I'm back to where I thought I belonged and wanted to be..but, as I grew in a worldly sense, no longer fit or wanted to fit. And here I am, back and still struggling, but with purpose and a committment that was missing in the beginning. A poignantly written expression of coming into one's own- whatever that does or doesn't turn out to be; provocative and excellent work.
It can't be finished anyway---that's the line that hit me. I think it's because we're constantly evolving, always changing in one way or another, bad or good. I love this!!
so true !
LIKE THE ABSTRACT AND THE COLORS..IS THIS NOT WHAT WE DO EVERY DAY..TRY TO MAKE AS MUCH FIT INTO IT..NEVER SEE THE WHOLE FINISHED PICTURE OF ALL THE DAYS PUT TOGETHER..AS WE EXPIRE TO SOON!!!! JUST A THOUGHT.
Thought-provoking and well-reasoned description of the enigma which is life. Mike
A illustration of great creativity my friend, I like the soft colors and the very original abstract shapes....!!! Great poem too....!!!
Well said Dirk! I enjoy the image very much as well.. [=
Interesting thoughts you have. I guess I have never thought of life as a puzzle, but rather that it has a purpose. When puzzling things happen, sooner or later the purpose is revealed.
Seventeen years later I’m still puzzling But I no longer look for outlines, a final image Life taught me that like all others who tried ...that is the truth.
Per usual with your latest ponderings...I am. Force, frustration, near madness, battles both internal and external, until, ironically enough, from chaos comes order, with the birth of realization that the center is the keystone, the pivotal and foundational aspect, around which all else must be built (IF we are to truly survive with even a shred of our sanity intact). Perhaps a great many years invested, but none wasted. Not a whisper of futility breathes, dear Dirk. You see, unbeknownst to you, it seems you have already SOLVED the ultimate puzzle of all: that everything must be built upon the basis of, and around...love. That's my take anyway, for whatever it may be worth. Extraordinary writing, my friend. Utterly extraordinary...surpassing even your own platinum standards. And the image, delightful (deja vu..I'm puzzling here over why on earth this strikes me as something so very familiar, but I've no clue) :)
Very thought provoking. I have been considering throwing the whole lot out and beginning again, myself. Just can't seem to find that central piece.
Great story and image today. Full of wonderful wisdom of what we learn. Thank you. Bunny
There are far too many pieces available. One cannot use them all. I find the pieces handed to me by others are often a poor fit, although sometimes with trimming, they're just right. At times, I see that a portion of the puzzle I thought was finished is actually incomplete and requires more work in order to be whole. These days it's a much easier process. Pieces that don't fit just don't fit, and that's okay. Pieces I thought would never fit now slip into the picture easily. Being on purpose and organic at the same time seems to be the key for me. Well. Probably too much information. You've given me a new way to see it, though, and that's always a good thing. Thank you!
I read someplace "life is not about the destination, it's about the journey". Perhaps it's not about solving the puzzle, but about the assembling of the pieces. This life we live here, may only be a small part of that puzzle, perhaps we get other chances at working on it. Your poetry is always thought provoking, making me reach deep inside as I sit and think.
