Description

I saw them, once…a Cyclops with an earring, a rabbit, and two people with improbably square heads. They live on a wall in Prague, or they did when I saw them. They were figures drawn in chalk on a decaying wall near the place I have come to know as “Beth’s Chinese Restaurant.” I’d always gone there with Beth, for noodles and sweet, plumb brandy. For egg-drop soup. I have taken to going there with Pavel, though it has been a time since we’ve indulged out taste for Chinese. Ah, but we’ve been to Coffee and Cigars a few times, though our favorite hang out is U Sudu. It’s my second home. I remember the Cyclops and the Rabbit, however, and the two people with square heads. “The Cyclops and the rabbit are lovers,” Pavel revealed to me when I first saw them. “They had an affair a few years ago, and the rabbit got pregnant. But you know…Cyclopses and rabbits are no good match. Their kids came out ugly.” He shrugged, and stepped aside as I took the picture. Now, though I have seen Pavel many times, the rabbit, the cyclops, and their two mis-shapen kids are gone. “Maybe they went to Batislava,” Pavel offered when I mentioned that they’d vanished. I like Pavel’s story; it’s so much better than the truth. They were washed away by rain. There is no romance in that, no tinge of epic fantasy. But now, I wonder…what would a rabbit, a cyclops, and two square headed children do in Bratislava? **** As always, thank you for viewing and reading, and commenting! Happy Valentines Day as well!

They've gone to live there because in Bratislave people are not so concerned with aesthetics as they are in Prague. They don't care when they see ugly kids. Again you made a great piece of poesy out of the small things of everyday life!

OMG, Chip, I LOVE this, and Pavel's remark about the ugly kids cracked me up!! Once again, you take a most ordinary, mundane thing such as bad art on a wall and given it life, humor and into my faves this goes!!!

Ohhh. Perhaps there are better jobs for Rabbits outside of Prague. Perhaps there is a Cyclopean community where they're building a Utopian society. More advanced schools for the square-headed children? Clearly, they'll need a more comprehensive education. Everyone knows you can fit more things into a square than you can into a circle. Maybe they left Prague to meet up with a certain Russian. Perhaps this special family can get some Nemaean implants . . . The possibilities are endless!

I think there is a beautiful light in this image, and that's why I got interested. Now, when I have read your background story for the image, it means so much more! Thank you for the mood travel. Take care!
